A library beyond books

Original short practice · True / False / Not Given · 6 questions

A When the council of the fictional town of Norbridge reviewed its library service, it discovered that book loans had fallen while visits to the building had risen. Staff suggested that residents were increasingly using the library as a place to study, meet neighbours and access computers. The council decided to explore new services without reducing its book collection.

B A six-month pilot introduced a small collection of tools that residents could borrow. The collection included sewing machines, basic gardening equipment and household repair kits. All borrowers attended a short induction before taking an item home. Tools could be borrowed for seven days, and there was no borrowing fee. A refundable deposit was required for the sewing machines only.

C The pilot attracted 180 registered borrowers. In a survey, several said that borrowing a tool allowed them to try a task before buying equipment of their own. Others valued the storage space they saved at home. Staff also held repair workshops every second Saturday, led by volunteers from the town. Places were limited, so participants had to book in advance.

D At the end of the pilot, the council approved a permanent service. It also proposed lending musical instruments, but this idea remained under discussion because suitable storage was not yet available. The library manager stressed that success should not be judged only by the number of items borrowed: conversations between residents and the skills shared in workshops were valuable outcomes too.
